The Guardian: How the world reacted to Trump's inauguration as US president
Caution in China, sorrow and anger in Mexico, cork-popping in Moscow – here are some of the global responses to Friday’s power handover
Germany
Germany will need a new economic strategy geared toward Asia should the new US administration start a trade war with China, vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said, warning of a “rough ride” hours after Donald Trump was sworn in.
“What we heard today were high nationalistic tones,” Gabriel said in an interview with the public broadcaster ZDF, in the first official German reaction to Trump’s inauguration. “I think we have to prepare for a rough ride.”
He added that Trump “was extremely serious” in his inauguration speech, which meant he would follow his promises on trade and other issues with actions. Europe and Germany must stand together “to defend our interests.”

WNU Editor: Among my contacts .... the reaction that I am receiving is mixed. To begin .... I would say the Chinese are the ones who are really worried. They are dependent on having a $300 billion trade surplus with the U.S. .... and their economy is incredibly vulnerable right now (i.e. too much bad debt on the provincial and municipal level). My contacts in Ukraine are telling me that President Poroshenko is expecting a rough time with President Trump .... specifically .... they are expecting the Trump administration to use current U.S. financial and economic aid to Ukraine as a lever to push the Ukraine government to seriously negotiate with the rebel groups in the east .... which is something that they have no appetite for. The Germans (at least their press) .... are still dismayed even though the election was over 2 months ago .... German dismay at Trump inauguration (DW). As to what is the reaction in the two countries where I live .... there is a sense of hope in Russia that things I going in the right direction (I tell them to not keep their hopes up too high) .... and in Canada .... they are like the Germans .... they are still in shock and in dismay and are expecting the worse (I tell them that they are right about thing getting worse .... but President Trump is not the one to blame for the mess that we are in .... and yes .... we are in a mess).
