A US-backed military coalition in Yemen has secretly paid al-Qaeda to leave cities and allowed others to retreat with weapons and looted cash, it has been claimed.

The Saudi led coalition has claimed 'again and again' to have made decisive victories over the past two years, forcing militants to abandon their strongholds in the war-torn country.

But many of those conquests came without firing a shot, according to an Associated Press investigation, which said al-Qaeda fighters have sometimes been allowed to retreat with arms and wads of money.
