If you thought Aussies hit the bottle a bit too hard, then spare a thought for the small country of Moldova.
Nestled between Ukraine and Romania, this patch of Europe may be landlocked but its residents seem to have no problem finding ways to wet their whistle.
In fact, it has the highest proportion of deaths relating to alcohol of any country in the world, according to the latest World Health Organisation report.
More than a quarter — 26.1 per cent — of all deaths there in 2016 were attributable to booze.
This compares to 4.6 per cent in Australia and a global average of 5.3 per cent.

WNU Editor: According to the above report .... Moldova is number one. Russia is number two. All that I can say is that I have had two car accidents in my life. One in Russia .... I was hit by a drunk driver. The second time was in Moldova .... again I was hit by a drunk driver. But aside from my own personal history .... it is true that in Russia alcohol related deaths are a major problem. Russians are big into binge drinking .... it is their way to escape from the world.
