Seattle will reduce its police department's budget by around $3million and reallocate some money to community programs after the City Council voted Tuesday evening to override Mayor Jenny Durkan's vetoes of adjustments to this year's budget.
The council's proposals approved last month were supported by demonstrators who have marched in the city for months following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis but were strongly opposed by the mayor and former police Chief Carmen Best.
Measures passed by the council will cut about $3million of the department's $400million annual budget this year. The cut represents about 1 per cent of the annual budget.
