Russian President Vladimir Putin shook hands with his 'dear friend' Xi Jinping upon his arrival in China today, with the pair aiming to bolster their relationship at a summit overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war. 

The leaders of the Eastern powers were pictured sharing a warm embrace as Xi's wife Peng Liyuan looked on with a smile before posing for a series of pictures emblematic of their strengthened ties in the face of Western opposition. 

China's President this week welcomes representatives of 130 countries for a forum on President Xi's vast trade and infrastructure Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
