Engineers at Caltech have developed a system of flat optical lenses that are said to be easily mass-produced and integrated with image sensors, paving the way for cheaper and lighter cameras. The technology relies on stacking two metasurfaces. The metasurfaces are dotted with 600nm tall silicon cylinders that alter the way light passes through them.
The paper "Miniature optical planar camera based on a wide-angle metasurface doublet corrected for monochromatic aberrations" by Amir Arbabi, Ehsan Arbabi, Seyedeh Mahsa Kamali, Yu Horie, Seunghoon Han & Andrei Faraon has been published in Nature Communications on Nov. 28, 2016.
