A new threat has emerged to Angela Merkel's bid to remain in power.

No, despite the international media attention, it is not from the anti-immigration far right but a straight-talking Europhile of the centre left.

While the world was watching US President Donald Trump's first week in power, Martin Schulz shook up Germany's political landscape.

The 61-year-old announced he would run against the Conservative Chancellor Ms Merkel and lead the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to this year's election.

Mr Schulz is an interesting character with a rags to riches story.

An alcoholic in his 20s after an injury ended his footballing dreams, Schulz turned his life around to forge a 23-year career in EU politics.

Until last month he was president of the bloc's parliament.
