Xiaomi publishes a Youtube video showing its 3rd generation under-display camera. The company expects to put it in a mass production phone next year:
GizmoChina reports that the 1st and 2nd generation used OLED displays with reduced pixel density in the camera area. The 3rd generation uses the same OLED pixel pitch, but the OLED "fill factor" is reduced to that light can penetrate to the camera. That way, pixel density, color accuracy, color gamut, and brightness in the camera area is similar to the rest of the display.
