The attacker had been a "person of interest" since 2016, police said. 

New Zealand is reeling from a knife-wielding rampage at a busy Auckland supermarket that left six fighting for their lives and the assailant dead. 

Authorities have called it a terror attack. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that the man behind Friday's terrorist attack in Auckland, who was shot dead by police after he stabbed six people in a supermarket, was inspired by ideologies of the Islamic State militant group.
