Sputnik: Military Coup Attempt Underway in Turkey

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim claims part of the military is attempting to overtake the country.

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said.

"This is a mutiny attempt. We will not let this attempt win. We will uphold democracy," he said on Turkish NTV. "The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

He added that those responsible "will pay the highest price."

In a statement, the Turkish military claims that it has taken over.
