VOX: The military has been deployed to Houston to search for survivors

The storm affects thousands of people.

The Texas Military Department started rescue operations on Saturday morning because the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey is so severe. They’re currently lifting people out of flooded areas with helicopters and sheltering nearly 2,000 people affected by the storm.

The Texas Military Department, which is the state’s agency that houses the Texas Army, Air, and State Guards, told Vox that so far it has conducted over 50 operations to remove people by Black Hawk helicopters from flooded areas. The department also noted it is working with the Red Cross and other partners to shelter around 1,700 evacuees throughout Texas. More than 3,000 Guard members are working to rescue people affected by the storm (that number increased from around 2,000 Guard members earlier this afternoon).
