Newsweek: NATO Summit Marked by Division Leaves Ukraine's Future Uncertain
Ukraine's potential pathway to NATO membership was the main topic on the agenda at the alliance's annual Summit, held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Vilnius, Lithuania, and sources in attendance told Newsweek there that the outcome came up considerably short of Ukraine's expectations.
After what multiple figures close to the Ukrainian delegation described as intense behind-the-scenes negotiations, the closest Kyiv came to receiving a guarantee of future membership was the inclusion of the word "invitation" in the summit's official communique, which included the sentence: "[NATO] will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met."

WNU Editor: Much of the media narrative has been negative on this NATO summit. That Ukraine did not get a clear roadmap to NATO membership, and that Kyiv will only get a certain amount of assistance. We saw many photo-ops of Zelensky one-on-one with NATO leaders, and even more reports on how upset the Ukraine President was on Tuesday. I am also reading the same narrative on Russian news and social media sites. They are cheering that Ukraine will not be a member of NATO, and that there is a lot of disunity within the NATO ranks.
I have a different take.
Ukraine may not have a clear path towards becoming a NATO member, but the security guarantees that it has been given is everything but being an official member of NATO .... Ukraine to rely on security guarantees from individual G7 allies until it joins NATO (CBC).
And as for military assistance, the new commitments are massive. Bottom line. More of everything including advanced weapons like long range long range missiles and F-16s .... All the Weapons Ukraine Will Get After the NATO Summit (Time).
I am willing to bet that behind closed doors Zelensky is pumping his fist in the air. He may not have gotten NATO troops on the ground in Ukraine waging war against Russia if he was a member, but he got everything else.
And as for the war. NATO has now laid the ground work for a massive escalation that I predict will be happening in the fall of this year. We are also now facing a very real possibility that with this massive escalation, NATO may be in a direct war with Russia by Christmas or the start of 2024.
