Kitsap Sun: USS Nimitz reaches Africa; takes call from Pence
The USS Nimitz recently reached the Horn of Africa in support of troop movements in Somalia and surrounding countries and to help maintain pressure on terrorist groups in the region, the United States Africa Command announced Monday.
The Bremerton-based aircraft carrier, already eight months into a journey that has taken the warship around Asia, the Middle East and now to Africa, is supporting "Operation Octave Quartz," in helping relocate military personnel while standing watch against al-Shabaab insurgents, an al-Qaida-aligned terrorist group.
