FOX News/Warrior Maven: Navy plans to build 15 new Constellation-class frigates in next 5 years
Adding large numbers of frigates to the force is in part due to a plan to 'free up' major warships.
Firing over-the-horizon deck-launched missiles, launching electronic warfare (EW) attacks, intercepting incoming enemy fire, and serving as a crucial information "node" across a networked surface, air and undersea force are merely a few of the Navy’s intended missions for its emerging fleet of new frigates.
The Navy’s 30-year shipbuilding plan outlines an ambitious and fast-moving plan to fund as many as 15 of the new ships over just the next five years, a high-speed effort to bring the new ship to life in just the next several years.
The document says the Navy plans to make "investments in FY2022 in long lead time material and the stand up of a ‘follow yard’ in FY2023 to increase FFG production to three ships in 2023 and up to four new frigates by 2025."
